Definitely an amazing track by the Pointer Sisters. There are 11 different versions of this song (2-12, with no version with the number 1), with a jazz, funk, and caribbean feel. It will make you feel young again!

Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal = GURU

April 20th, 2010 by admin

If the members of the Elite Camp were asked the to list their greatest influences when it comes to music and DJ’ing, somewhere in that list we’d all have Gang Starr. Many of us started our DJ careers in the early to mid 1990′s. This was at a time when it was hard to figure out the titles to the latest Hip Hop tracks. But… there was one artist’s signature voice and flow, one groups signature beats and sound that made it easier to find out the titles of those tracks. This of course is GURU and Gang Starr! We are all shocked and saddened by the lost of Keith Elam a.k.a. GURU. The Elite Camp would like to send our condolences and prayers to the family of GURU and the entire Gang Starr Foundation. Whether it’s Gang Starr or his Jazzmatazz projects, his music and memory will live on through many people… and definitely through us!

Let’s take it back to 1997.

D Jay Jung may have posted this on his blog, but this deserves a re-post. DJ Babu in the 1997 ITF Beat Juggling category. This definately was an inspiration for our crew and other DJ’s around this time. Oh, how we wish the DJ battle scene would come around again full circle. (sigh)

Valentine’s Day is upon us…

So pick up one of these cards courtesy of Kuro Co. that we found on Etsy.com. A very cool concept utilizing the traditional V-Day card with a finishing touch from famous rap lyrics from some of the best (and worst).

The Elite Camp Retrospective 001: Baby Come to Me

February 5th, 2010 by admin

Here’s the latest feature to the blog, The Elite Camp Retrospective. One of those things that we’ve been meaning to start up, so here it is.

This is one of those joints that brings you back to childhood, or teenage-hood, depending on your age. Patti Austin with her amazing voice, and James Ingram in his 80′s swagger. Definately a feel good track for a friday. Enjoy!

How I would rather DJ in this weather than now.

RIP Grand Master Roc Raida.

September 20th, 2009 by admin

raida

Words cannot explain how much of an impact this man has made in all of our lives. When you think about turntablism in New York City since way back when, instantly you think of this man and his crew, The X-Ecutioners. He has definately pushed the envelope when it came to coming up with mind-blowing beat juggles, insane body tricks, and the most bulliest battle disses. Over the years coming up as DJs, we would watch, rewind, pause his routines off of a VHS tape to the point when you do playback his set, its all snowy and static from all the times watching it. One of the things that was admirable about him was his ability to keep turntablism alive with his Gong Battle as well as showcasing his famous routines all around the world. All this before alot of microwave popcorn DJ’s got Serato. Roc Raida is one reason why we would always buy doubles of one record, just so we can try to double up as fast as him, and try to do the body tricks he would do too. For those that do not know who this man is, type in his name on You Tube and see him in action. And for all you sucker DJ’s out there that think you are doing your thing and don’t know who this man is, what he’s done for the turntablist community is pretty amazing, and just know that the DJ’s that are up on this guy and have been influenced by him, have the ability to smoke you in a battle with real records.

This man is one of the most influencial inventors and musicians ever. His contributions to the world of music since the 1930′s is remarkable. Truly, he is an innovator and changed the face of music history. If you don’t know, look it up. Rest in Peace, Les.

Rest In Peace, Baatin.

(from left to right): J Dilla, T3, and Baatin in the early Slum Village years.

At the tender age of 35, the world has lost another member of Slum Village, Titus “Baatin” Glover. This sudden and unfortunate death, after the passing of J Dilla in 2006 from Lupus complications, is a tragic moment for the rap world. For those that don’t know the power of this man’s voice, pick up a copy of any of the earlier Slum Village albums to see what we mean. From the gritty, yet neckbreaking production to the explicit yet seamless lyrics, Slum Village has broke ground for many artists around today. Rest in peace, Baatin.

“My name is Baatin Rasual Rasii, Tantric master, sex, two or three.”

Rest In Peace, Michael.

A musical genius in many peoples’ eyes. No one will ever do what this man did across so many genres over so many years. EVER.
